Dear Parents,
On Saturday 17 March 2018 the by-election for the federal seat of Batman will take place. Funding for Catholic schools will play a vital role in this by-election, as we seek a truly sector-blind, needs-based funding model that will ensure that our schools are accessible and affordable for all.
We have been approached by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) to gauge Batman’s Catholic education community’s views on education. On Thursday 8th March 2018 the federal Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, and ALP candidate for Batman, Ged Kearney, will be holding a forum at St Anthony’s School, Alphington, starting at 6.00 pm.
As you are doubtless aware, Catholic education is being placed under considerable financial stress as a result of the legislative changes enacted last year by the Turnbull Government. In addition, the Australian Greens are pushing a suite of education policies that, if implemented, would have a profoundly detrimental impact on Catholic schools.
This community forum will serve as an excellent opportunity to hear what Mr Shorten and Ms Kearney have to say and pose any questions that might need to be asked. As valued members of the Catholic school family, I strongly urge you to attend. Children are very welcome to attend.
Thank you for your support.
NIck Marinelli, Principal
